January Wrap Up & Reflection

Hey Reader,

Considering the LA Fires, inauguration, and what 2025 has hit us with so far, how are you doing?

What's top of mind for us?

Aside from a recent getaway to Monterey with my family, here's a quick list of resources to catch you up.

Top of Mind

  1. Tips for creating online wildfire support fundraisers
  2. Tracking relationships, data, and finances effectively for your nonprofit
  3. How nonprofits can simplify fundraising with CRMs
  4. How to address imposter syndrome as a nonprofit leader and create a healthy work culture

Reflection: Is now the time to be strategic or tactical?

I recently attended an open forum hosted by a client's board of directors. A question was raised: is now the time to be strategic or tactical?

Recent policy changes are putting pressure on lots of organizations to stand down from their mission. Leaders are faced with the decision to antagonize, cooperate, or evolve to fit within mandates.

Without knowing what the impact of said policies will look like until later this year, what are organizations to do if they are in direct conflict or are threatened with funding?

This is where being tactical comes into play over strategy.

Last year's strategy is out the window; what was working previously may not be the case moving forward. For the time being. So again, what are organizations to do?

  • Shore up supporters and activate your network
  • Reach out to donors and ensure they remain committed to your mission
  • Align with funder priorities

How do you do that?

  • Segment your database to personalize engagement with volunteers, program participants, donors, partners, etc.
  • Create fundraising campaigns around your org's battle cry
  • Gather your programmatic data to showcase the impact your organization is making to funders

Although there may be some rough roads ahead, we remain committed to serving nonprofits and the communities in which they serve.

Gratitude

Thankfully, my family and loved ones were not victims of the recent LA fires. Unfortunately, that is not the case for some of our partners. Praying for peace, restoration, and comfort for all families, business owners, nonprofits, schools, and anyone else affected by the fires. If there are resources to share or requests for prayer to lift up, let me know.

Hey Reader, This week, we are going down the rabbit hole of a recent Salesforce report. Salesforce just released their 7th annual Nonprofit Trends Report. They surveyed 1,229 nonprofits across six countries. The findings cover fundraising, AI adoption, staffing, digital channels, and program outcomes. What kept coming up was infrastructure. Orgs investing in better fundraising strategies and AI tools while the data underneath those investments isn't ready to support them. Staff leaving and...

Hey Reader, I've received some great feedback from last week's issue and I hope to continue that momentum today! Let me know what's resonating and what you would like to see in these emails. Let's get into it... The Tool-First Trap The question I get asked more than any other — at every event, every discovery call, every session I run — is this: 'Which CRM should we use?' And I understand why. The CRM is the thing you can see. It has a price tag. It feels like the decision. But in almost...

Hey Reader, There has been a lot of activity in the nonprofit world as of late, and I thought to share a few things that have come up during blog interviews, conference sessions/conversations, and nonprofit networking events. Three things came up so consistently that I'm treating them as sector patterns, and sharing what it means if you're seeing any of this inside your own organization. PATTERN 1: Data lives in too many places, and nobody trusts any of them. The CRM has some of it. The...
