Coffee, CRMs, and Celebrating Heritage

Reader,

It’s been a while since I’ve sent one of these. Client work took over, and the newsletter had to take a back seat. So here I am ☕.

I’m happy to be back because we’re kicking off Hispanic Heritage Month.

Every year, this month pulls me back to the same thought: our Latino community has so much more power and wealth than the headlines ever give us credit for. We’re not just the stories of struggle (though those matter too). We’re business owners. We’re nonprofit leaders. We’re parents raising families and quietly giving back in ways that never make the news.

I’ve seen it firsthand—at golf tournaments, at galas, at neighborhood fundraisers. Folks building what I call “stealth wealth.” People who show up, create jobs, fund causes, and create opportunities.

And I guess I’m writing this as a reminder for both of us: we’re not to be seen only as recipients of services. We’re donors. We’re philanthropists. We’re drivers of impact.

That’s the spirit I want to carry into the rest of this year—with clients, with work, with family.

Impact Innovators

If you’re new here, I run a blog series called Impact Innovators—stories of nonprofit leaders building systems that last. Here are a few you can catch up on:

  1. Lucy Herrera on the importance of strong infrastructure at Legacy LA
  2. Michael Centeno's community-led journey with Tia Chucha's Centro Cultural & Bookstore
  3. Jennifer Grissom on rebranding with purpose at Food Access LA

📣 Quick announcement: I’m leading a workshop

On October 15 at 8:30 AM, I’ll be hosting a Coffee With… session: Discover What CRM Can Do for You.

If you’ve ever felt like your donor data lives in a black hole—or like your CRM is more headache than help—this is for you. We’ll talk about:

  • How to make donor engagement way less complicated
  • Where to save your staff hours each week (yes, hours!)
  • The real wins and fails other nonprofits shared in a recent CRM survey
  • A shortlist of CRM systems that actually fit a nonprofit budget

👉 Register to join in person
👉 Register to join via Zoom

And if you don’t need it? Do me a favor and forward this to someone who does. You never know who’s secretly drowning in spreadsheets.

Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Hey Reader, This week, we are going down the rabbit hole of a recent Salesforce report. Salesforce just released their 7th annual Nonprofit Trends Report. They surveyed 1,229 nonprofits across six countries. The findings cover fundraising, AI adoption, staffing, digital channels, and program outcomes. What kept coming up was infrastructure. Orgs investing in better fundraising strategies and AI tools while the data underneath those investments isn't ready to support them. Staff leaving and...

Hey Reader, I've received some great feedback from last week's issue and I hope to continue that momentum today! Let me know what's resonating and what you would like to see in these emails. Let's get into it... The Tool-First Trap The question I get asked more than any other — at every event, every discovery call, every session I run — is this: 'Which CRM should we use?' And I understand why. The CRM is the thing you can see. It has a price tag. It feels like the decision. But in almost...

Hey Reader, There has been a lot of activity in the nonprofit world as of late, and I thought to share a few things that have come up during blog interviews, conference sessions/conversations, and nonprofit networking events. Three things came up so consistently that I'm treating them as sector patterns, and sharing what it means if you're seeing any of this inside your own organization. PATTERN 1: Data lives in too many places, and nobody trusts any of them. The CRM has some of it. The...
